PLY SPLIT BRAIDING

In Ply Split braiding one cord is plied to make 2, 3 or 4 ply cords. In this technique of braiding the neighbouring plied cords are inserted into each other by opening the ply and inserting the neighbouring cord into that ply. The normal product is a simple braid as seen below, but this technique of braiding can be used to create 3D objects also as seen below. I learnt this technique in an open elective at NID (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad). One can explore many more possibilities and products using the same technique. Mr. Errol Pires taught me this technique and I m really thankful to him for this. This technique is used in India to make camel girths and similiar bands.

KALAMKARI

The literal meaning of Kalamkari is a 'painting done using a pen.' This art traces its origin almost 3000 years ago. There are two distinctive styles of Kalamkari in India - Srikalahasti style and Machalipatnam style. The Kalamkari art of painting undergoes a laborious, gradual process of resist- dyeing and hand painting. Unlike other styles of painting, Kalamkari painting goes through a lot of treatment before and after the painting is completed on the cotton fabric. The colours change according to the treatment of cloth, or quality of mordant. Every step from soaking of the fabric, to sketching the outlines to washing and drying the fabric, is done carefully and cautiously.

A Kalamkari painting of Radha and Krishna

This is painting on fabric. I did this Kalamkari painting in a Summer workshop held by NID (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad), in the month of May, 2009. The drawing is done free hand without marking the drawing with a pencil earlier. A pointed bamboo stick is used to draw the picture. The black outline is done by fermented jaggery. Various colours and effects can be obtained by using cow dung, seeds plants, crushed flowers etc...

IDENTITY - PRINTS

As a part of our academic curriculum in Sir J.J.School of Art (Mumbai) I had Print as one of my subjects. Over here I learnt many kinds of printing on paper like screen printing. Lino-printing etc… These are some of my print expressions….

IDENTITY

These are some of my paintings which I did while I was pursuing Fine Arts in J.J.School of Art (Mumbai). Its been atleast 3 years now, that I havent felt the canvas through the brush. The feeling of applying colours on the canvas is the one that cannot be described. Believe me all u need is some colours and brush and a small piece of canvas and one can sit alone for days to explore oneself within.
